ATM | Student Learning: One responsibility, many pathways to success

ATM-20250505

At the heart of every decision made by the Board of Trustees is a simple but powerful question: How does this support student learning? The 69堂精品app Trustee Guide to Good Governance identifies student learning as a core responsibility of trusteeship. Trustees are entrusted with setting the strategic direction, approving policies, allocating resources, and monitoring results, all with the goal of improving outcomes for every student we serve.

Student learning encompasses more than academic achievement; it also includes the social, emotional, and physical well-being of students. Through our governance role, the Board is committed to ensuring that every learner has equitable access to high-quality instruction, welcoming learning environments, and the supports they require to thrive.

In Ward 3, this commitment to lifelong learning pathways is clearly visible at Red Deer Lake School and Millarville Community School—and continues as students transition into high school.

  • At Red Deer Lake School, a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy interventions supports academic growth at all grade levels, alongside an intentional focus on building a trauma-informed, inclusive school culture. The recent development of a new inclusive playground reflects the school's commitment to ensuring that all students have opportunities to play, connect, and belong. Through the school's guiding motto, "Belong. Believe. Become. Be A Dragon," Red Deer Lake fosters a vibrant community of learners. Students here also benefit from early exposure to music through the partner-band program and participate in a proud legacy of excellence in school athletics—both of which continue to be nurtured at École Secondaire Foothills Composite High School and Alberta High School of Fine Arts. These Board-supported opportunities reflect our shared belief that student learning includes the development of the whole child—mind, body, and spirit.

  • At Millarville Community School, students engage in experiential learning projects that connect classroom concepts to real-world applications. The school’s emphasis on wellness is supported by the Minds Matter program and is further celebrated through events like the Colour Run, which promote physical activity and community spirit. Millarville also benefits from exceptional community engagement, demonstrated through successful initiatives like the $450,000 playground project and beloved annual traditions such as the Round Up and wagon rides. As Millarville students transition to Oilfields High School, they continue to access rich and innovative learning opportunities, such as the Vertical Farming Initiative—an example of how the Division’s investment in agricultural programming and career education pathways continues to grow and evolve with student interests.

Across both schools—and extending into high school—students are supported to build strong foundations, develop deep skills, and explore a wide range of opportunities that prepare them for success both in school and beyond.

As a Board, we monitor student learning results through the Alberta Education Assurance Framework, school education plan reports, board learning, and director reports that provide us with information about schools and system learning. This commitment to evidence-informed decision-making ensures that we continue to improve and adapt to meet the evolving needs of our learners.

We recognize that success looks different for every student. By fostering environments where curiosity, resilience, and achievement are nurtured, we help all learners reach their full potential.

Student learning is not simply one responsibility among many; it is the foundation of the Board’s work. Every decision, every policy, and every strategic plan is made with the success and well-being of students at the center. As a trustee for 69堂精品app, I’m proud to support a system where students are encouraged to grow, explore, and thrive—academically, artistically, athletically, and through community connection.

Yours in learning,
